Campo Santo site

Campo Santo is situated just 50 meters away from the Old Town’s southern gate. Not only is it a part of the city’s historic and cultural heritage, but that of the entire country as well.

Interestingly, information was found in the old city archives, regarding the site about an occasional creek running between two giant rock slabs. For centuries, this water source was believed to be holly which adds a mythical element to the whole story. The site shows remains of an ancient church of St. Peter which can be recognized by rocks painted in red. Next to it there used to be a Benedictine abbey built sometime between the sixth and eighth century.

Some of the restored remains of the abbey can be seen inside the restaurant.
